This is a rough plan for a set of 2 videos I’m filming

I’m here to tell you about inexpensive film gear and tips that can you raise the production quality of your indie projects without raising your debt.

So your parents, loved ones or minions have just bought you an inexpensive Canon DSLR T3I (or T2I if they’re really cheap) with a Kit Lens. They even got you a memory card, a cheap case and a cheap tripod!

What next? What would I buy, if this was all I had?

The first thing I would buy is a UV filter for my lenses. The UV filters are key, they cost around $30 and they protect your lens from scratching. About every year you pop off your old one and get a new one. This is an excellent habit to get in to with even your cheap lenses.

The next thing I would pick up is a $100 50mm lens with it’s own UV filter. The canon 1.8 50mm lens is a fast prime lens, proving you sometimes can have it fast, cheap and good. If you check online sites like craigslist or ebay you can get lucky and find someone upgrading to a better lens. Many times used lens come with UV filters. The second 50mm I bought was only $80 and it came in the original box and had a UV filter. I also bought it from someone who looked to be about 12. A prime lens means you have to actually pick up your camera and move it close or further away from your subject if you want to change the zoom. It’s a prime, prime lenses don’t zoom. They do however look sharper, and are faster then zoom lens. Sharper and Faster? What does that mean? The image just looks better then an equivalent from other similar lenses and fast means it can be set to a really low f stop like 1.8 which is really handy in low light situations. The nifty 50 as many people call it , is a lens that beats out far more expensive lenses. This lens is fantastic for closeups, with a narrow depth of field it blurs the background behind the talent helping the viewer focus on the subject instead of being distracted by the Banthas and Stormtroopers walking around in the background.

The next items on my list for this starter set is a 58mm ND fader and the 58-52mm adapter ring to put the fader on your 50mm lens as well. A ND filter allows you to shoot with a narrow depth of field in bright situations which is key to most day shoots. A ND fader gets darker and lighter as you twist it so you don’t need to get several thickness of ND. Before I got my ND fader I had several ND filters of varying darkness, each costing around $40- $80 each. I can get rid of all of those for just 1 ND fader at around $50 and the stepdown ring is about $15.

Another important and cheap accessory is a monopod. These are cheap $30 and provide a lot of versatility to your shooting. These videos inspired me http://vimeo.com/28517046 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NMBK30hHM8

With your lenses, filters, faders, monopod, tripod go out and shoot a music or video or a video with only sound and music. Once you’ve shot a few things your’ ready to move on. Now you will want to record sound, and dialogue! This is what I recommend.

The Rode Video Mic is the best mic for a beginning filmmaker to own, http://www.long-mcquade.com/?page=products&ProductsID=5861 and it’s less then $200 http://www.leoscamera.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=62&products_id=514

Getting someone to put the mic on a boom so it can be as close to the actors as possible is key http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83d3qLHaAN4 We had to replace our Rode Boom pole mid season of filming Standard Action season 1. We ordered a sweet looking pole off the net for $200. When it showed up we realized it was way shorter then we thought and I made one out of a painters pole. It works really well and I would only upgrade for something in the $400-$500 range and it will be a while before we have the budget for that.

Since many cheap DSLR cameras have issues with audio it’s best to plug your mic in to a seperate audio recorder. We use the Zoom H4N but for a long time we didn’t have a Mic good enough to use all the fancy jacks on it. The Rode video mic has a tiny stereo out mini jack to you can get away with a much cheaper recorder. Check out some of them here http://www.long-mcquade.com/?page=search&SearchTxt=audio+recorder&x=0&y=0 . To make matching the separate files possible you really need to use a slate to you have scene and take numbers on the audio file and the movie file. Make one out of something since it’s damn hard to find anywhere that sells em for a reasonable price.

A mini white board from the dollar store works well and you can use it to white balance the cameras. Don’t forget your dry erase markers!

Earphones, get something good and always monitor your sound while shooting, wind can kill a good scene. And planes are hard to notice without sound.

Get some better editing software, Check out Adobe Premiere Elements and tell me how it goes (I’ve seen it bundled with Photoshop elements for as littles as $100) http://success.adobe.com/en/na/sem/products/premiereelements.html?kw=p&sdid=EQDGP&skwcid=TC|22180|premiere%20elements%20adobe||S|b|8526329114

Good luck!

At the time of this post I’ve run three indiegogo fundraisers.

Only the last one was truly successful, but I did a lot of things differently with the last one so here’s my quick and dirty guide to doing it.

1: Keep it realistic!

Don’t ask for a crazy amount. People won’t want to donate to you or support you if you’re asking for $100,000 so you can write a book! People like that get mocked – if they’re mentioned at all. Having such a large target can scare people off from donating entirely. The fundraiser doesn’t stop when you reach your goal, you just get more creative with your updates and perks!

2: Use Indiegogo (or something like it).

Kickstarter is cool, but here are the two reasons I won’t use it.

I: No Canadians allowed. Last I checked you needed a US bank account. Not a deal breaker, but a hurdle and a complication I don’t need.

II: You don’t get to keep the money if you don’t make your goal! This is crucial. I acknowledge that from a donor’s point of view, there are reasons why you wouldn’t want to invest unless the project makes its goal. The thing is that with all the publicity you just generated, even with only part of your goal, you can make something great happen. Here’s my story: the second fundraiser I ran was to get cash to rent a theatre for the premiere of my second feature film, The Directors Project. I started a fundraiser for raise $2000 to put on a gala party (well, not that gala – prices usually run pretty high to rent a movie theatre in Vancouver at any reasonable time of day). I ended up not making my goal, but a movie theatre contacted me while I was running the fundraiser and said they would help me out with a cheaper rate. So I had my premiere, the actors got their exposure, and that’s all I wanted. So even though it was technically a failure, I achieved my objective.

P.S. A big shout out to The Ridge Theatre in Vancouver, you guys rock!

3: Attack of the Updates! (Updates! Updates! Updates!)

The fundraiser I helped run for the second season of Standard Action involved lots of written updates by my other half, Joanna. She would write updates on the Indiegogo site as well as blog postings on the Standard Action website. We would also link these on the facebook page for Standard Action and the Twitter account. We plus a bunch of the cast and crew got together on three separate occasions to shoot several update videos each time. We tried to make them silly, funny and enjoyable to watch – not just us begging. I also needed them to be easy to set up, shoot and edit since I’m low on spare time and always on the hunt for work. The last set of videos was just me doing one-minute interviews, which worked really well, was easy to shoot (I shot it at a party) and easy to edit. In retrospect, I wish I’d done more interviews, since I think it helps show potential donors that it really is just a bunch of normal people involved and not weirdos or scam artists.

You should aim to have a written blog post or article every other week and a video up on the weeks in between the written stuff.

Some examples of our video updates:

There are more examples at the bottom of the post.

4: Start Tweeting! (social media)

This ties in very deeply to the updates. Once you’ve posted an update, spread it around! Get on Twitter and get your friends and cast and crew to tweet a link to the latest update. Facebook is great too. Start a Facebook page and a Twitter account for your project so you can use it to transmit information. Remind people that if they can’t donate, they can repost the link and spread the word. People who’ve already donated don’t mind doing this as well. If you make the updates funny and interesting it makes it even easier to spread the word. This is also huge if you get some big donors. We’ve been able to give shoututs to people over Twitter. We also start interacting with them and other people see this. Use the net! Contact podcasts and blogs that might be interested in your stuff. Don’t be pushy! Blogs and podcasts get lots of spam and scam stuff, so they can have little patience for annoying people.

A big thing I’ve noticed is that many podcasts want intros or audio bits to introduce things. The best part about this is they usually want a new one for every episode. If you do this for them, they will love you! Think about it – if you make something for them that supports and promotes them, how can they not love you? We submitted an intro to a podcast I like and they invited Joanna and I on as guests. All we did for ours was shove two actors in a bush and they talked about how they were hiding from skeletons and going to listen to this podcast on a crystal ball. It took about five minutes to record and five minutes to clean up with Audacity (a free audio editor that rocks my socks).

This helped promote us, and I got to interact with people who were celebrities to me! That was awesome all by itself, let alone the huge bump in views and hits we got because of it. Another thing is that many podcasts incorporate a live element like chatrooms, so if you can log on to the chatroom while they’re recording , you can interact with them on the show.

5: Go the extra mile.

If you get any big donors (like donations of $500 or more) do extra stuff not listed on your perks. If people know they will get more than what’s listed, it can add a lot of incentive to donating that extra bit. Surprise things like videos from the cast thanking someone specfically make great promotional videos because anyone who sees this knows they can also get this kind of personal interaction with you. Seriously, if I could donate $1000 to Supernatural and see a public video on Youtube of Sam and Dean giving a shoutout to me, I would do it, wouldn’t you?

This an example of a super easy-to-shoot video done by Joanna to thank our top donors.

Okay, go out there and start fundraising!

Also, please post a link in the comments to your fundraiser as well as your thoughts on how full of BS I am!

My page on IndieGoGo

The Standard Action IndieGoGo page

The Standard Action Homepagee

These are some easy interviews I did that worked as promotional videos because it was new content we could announce online and promote.
